Self-ligating braces, a distinct type of metal brace, are crafted to expedite and enhance the comfort of braces treatment.
These braces resemble both fixed metal and clear braces, with brackets affixed to the front surface of your teeth, through which a slender arch wire is threaded to link them together. The self-tightening mechanism, paired with state-of-the-art heat-activated wires, ensures a relatively gentle process for aligning teeth.
How do self-ligating braces differ from conventional braces?
When it comes to appearance, self-ligating braces are quite similar to traditional braces as they both use a system of brackets and wires. However, self-ligating braces incorporate advanced technology that removes the necessity for elastic bands or metal ties to keep the straightening archwire in place.
Unlike fixed braces, which rely on elastic bands around the brackets, self-ligating brackets utilize a small clip mechanism to secure the arch wire. The friction caused by elastic bands in fixed braces might lead to longer treatment times. Conversely, because self-ligating braces do not rely on elastic bands, treatment durations can be notably shorter.
Gentle movement
Unlike traditional brackets, patients often feel less discomfort with each adjustment when using self-ligating braces, as they provide a more consistent adjustment pace.
The clip mechanism present in self-ligating braces allows the arch wire greater flexibility to adapt to the movement of your teeth, offering a bespoke and highly comfortable orthodontic treatment.
Self-ligating braces are appropriate for both adults and children. However, there are certain orthodontic cases for which these braces may not be suitable.
