However, once treatment commences, your cooperation is vital in maintaining your oral hygiene routine. It’s crucial to continue brushing and flossing your teeth regularly while wearing braces to prevent the buildup of plaque and bacteria, especially if food particles get trapped in your braces. Adhering to a good oral hygiene routine will help maintain the health of your teeth and gums while we work towards achieving your new, fantastic smile!

FREE Initial Smile Assessment
This optional consultation is provided free of charge and offers you an opportunity to discuss your smile goals, preferences, and any concerns you may have with one of our Orthodontic Treatment Coordinators. They will provide an overview of the treatment process, available brace options, typical costs, and payment plans including financing.
During this initial assessment, one of our Orthodontists will evaluate your suitability for treatment and identify any pre-existing conditions, such as gum disease, that may need to be addressed before commencing teeth straightening.
Comprehensive Clinical Smile Assessment & Treatment Plan
During this thorough clinical consultation, we will meticulously evaluate your teeth and jaws. This typically includes an intra-oral 3D scan, a comprehensive set of visual records, and an OPG X-ray.
Based on these assessments, the Orthodontist will discuss various treatment options, brace selections, associated costs, and estimated treatment duration with you.
Following the consultation, you will receive a personalized Treatment Plan. This document will outline your preferred treatment options, associated costs, and available payment and financing alternatives.
Pre-treatment
Should your Clinical Assessment identify any pre-existing conditions, it’s essential to resolve them before commencing orthodontic treatment.
Usually, these issues may include minor concerns such as requiring a filling or improving gum health, which your regular dentist can manage. However, in certain cases, more complex issues like tooth extraction or other specialized interventions may be necessary. In such instances, rest assured that at Bristol Dental Specialists, we have a comprehensive team of experts available to address all your needs under one roof.
Start of treatment
Following the assessment, the next stage in your treatment journey is the fitting appointment. Here, we’ll affix your appliance to your teeth, a process sometimes referred to as bonding, particularly for traditional braces.
For those opting for braces, brackets will be attached to the front surface of your teeth (or the back for lingual braces). If you’ve chosen Invisalign treatment, the aligners are worn similarly to a gum shield but require replacement every few weeks. Therefore, we’ll provide you with multiple sets to use during the initial weeks of your treatment journey.
Adjustment and progress checking appointments
Orthodontic treatment duration varies depending on the complexity of your teeth alignment issues, ranging from a few months to two years or longer. Throughout this period, you’ll need regular appointments with us, typically every six to eight weeks, for adjustments and progress checks.
These appointments allow us to ensure that your teeth are moving as intended and that the treatment is progressing efficiently.
For those undergoing treatment with Invisalign aligners, we can provide access to a dental monitoring app. This app reduces the need for frequent check-up appointments by allowing you to upload weekly photos of your teeth’s progress directly from your smartphone. It’s a convenient way to integrate your orthodontic treatment into your lifestyle!
Completion of Treatment!
This marks a significant milestone! It’s time to celebrate your remarkable new smile. For our team, it’s always a joyous occasion. Witnessing our patients’ reactions as they see their newly aligned teeth in the mirror for the first time is incredibly rewarding. We’ll capture this moment with photos so you can share it with your loved ones.
Finally, we’ll schedule an appointment for you to receive your Retainer. This step is crucial to maintain the results of your treatment, ensuring your teeth remain in their new position and your beautiful smile lasts for years to come!
Follow-up Appointments After Treatment
After your braces are removed, you’ll receive comprehensive aftercare instructions and information. Additionally, we’ll provide you with a direct contact number for our Orthodontic Care Team in case you have any urgent questions or concerns.
However, our commitment to your care doesn’t end there. You’re now entering the retention phase, which is just as vital as the treatment itself. This phase focuses on maintaining the new position of your teeth. To ensure everything progresses smoothly, we’ll schedule follow-up appointments at 3, 6, and 12 months after your braces are removed.
