Dental Check-Ups at Bristol Dental Specialists

What’s involved, why they matter, and what to expect

Why are dental check-ups important?

Regular dental check-ups are the cornerstone of good oral health. Even if your teeth feel fine, problems like tooth decay, gum disease, or oral cancer can develop silently. Seeing a dentist or dental therapist regularly means:
  • Early detection of issues – cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer are easier and less costly to treat when caught early.
  • Preventive care – professional advice and cleaning help stop problems before they start.
  • Protecting overall health – gum disease has links to conditions like diabetes and heart disease.
  • Confidence and comfort – fresh breath and a healthy smile boost wellbeing.

How often should you have a check-up?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Your dentist will recommend an interval based on your oral health and risk factors.
  • Low-risk patients: every 12–24 months
  • Higher-risk patients: as often as every 3–6 months
This approach follows NICE guidance, which supports personalised recall intervals rather than a fixed “every six months” rule.

What happens during a dental check-up?

A routine check-up is thorough but straightforward. Here’s what you can expect:
1. Medical and dental history review
We’ll ask about your general health, medications, and any changes since your last visit.
2. Oral health examination
Your dentist will examine:
    • Teeth for decay, cracks, or wear
    • Gums for signs of disease
    • Tongue, cheeks, and soft tissues for abnormalities
    • Jaw joints and bite alignment This includes an oral cancer screening, which is quick and painless.
3. X-rays (if needed)
X-rays help detect hidden problems like cavities between teeth, bone loss, or impacted teeth. They’re taken only when clinically necessary.
4. Gum health check
We may measure gum pockets to assess for early gum disease.
5. Professional advice
You’ll receive tailored guidance on brushing, flossing, diet, and lifestyle habits (such as smoking or alcohol) to keep your mouth healthy.
6. Cleaning (if required)
If there’s plaque or tartar build-up, we’ll recommend a scale and polish or refer you to our hygienist.
