Dental Hygiene

Your gums are the supporting structure for your teeth and if they are not kept clean and healthy, there is a risk of gum disease, tooth decay and tooth loss…

Dental Hygiene at Bristol Dental Specialists

At Bristol Dental Specialists, our hygienist plays a vital support role for Periodontal treatment prescribed by our Specialist James Ban.

Your gums are the supporting structure for your teeth and if they are not kept clean and healthy, there is a risk of gum disease, tooth decay and tooth loss.  To keep your gums in tip top condition, we recommend you brush your teeth and gums twice a day with a suitable fluoride toothpaste.  Sometimes however, we simply need a helping hand, there may be a difficult area to clean or a medical condition or medication that affects your gums, this is where a dental hygienist or therapist can help.

The Dental Hygienist

Dental hygienists are mainly concerned with ‘preventive’ dental health and treating gum disease – giving advice on the care of your teeth and gums and helping you to maintain things at home. They professionally clean your teeth by removing plaque and tartar, usually called a ‘scale and polish’. Hygienists also give advice about diet and about preventing tooth decay. They work closely with our Clinicians to give you the care that is tailored to your needs.

The Dental Therapist

As well as doing all the work that a dental hygienist does, a dental therapist can also carry out some dental procedures such as fillings and removal of baby teeth.

Both Dental hygienists and Therapists are also qualified to take dental x-rays. The Clinician will use these to help diagnose problems and decide on the possible treatment. Dental hygienists can also place fissure sealants, apply fluoride varnishes and administer fluoride treatments.Tooth whitening is also often carried out by the dental hygienist, under a prescription from a dentist or Specialist clinician.

Book directly

Did you know that you can know refer yourself for a scale and polish without seeing a dentist first?  Sometimes patients feel they could do with a helping hand or would just like cleaner teeth for a special occasion.
