How are you feeling?

This month we’re moving away from dental care to focus on wellbeing and mental health.  Having healthy teeth and gums is one less thing to worry about and great oral health will enhance your overall wellbeing, but how else can we ensure we’re taking care of ourselves?

The Covid 19 pandemic has had a huge effect on mental health.  Not only did it bring genuine concerns for health and the health of those around you, but the pandemic also gave many people financial worries.  For others loneliness became a real problem and those who lived alone during the lockdowns became completely isolated.

How often do you check in and make sure you are feeling well, even great?  You may be struggling with getting back into routines, suffering from loneliness or just feel overwhelmed juggling home life with work.  We’ve looked at some ways you can give your mental health some tender loving care.

Connecting with people and having good relationships with others is so important for your mental wellbeing. Take time each day to be with your family, for example, try arranging a fixed time to eat dinner together.  Arrange a day out with friends you have not seen for a while or even volunteer at a local school, hospital, or community group.   Have a look at
https://volunteeringmatters.org.uk/ for information on how you can volunteer.  Use technology positively with visual chat apps like Skye, FaceTime and Zoom especially if you live far away from family and friends.

Eating well and staying active is not only great for your physical health and fitness but it can also improve your mental health by raising your self-esteem.  Try setting yourself achievable goals or challenges, physical exercise can positively change your mood. You don’t have to spend hours in a gym, it’s best to find activities you enjoy and make them a part of your life.  A daily walk or even a couch to 5k app is a great way to keep you focussed.  Make some time for you throughout the week.

Learning new skills will also help you connect with others, as well as boost your self-confidence and raise self-esteem.  You could try learning a new language or a practical skill.  Try new hobbies that challenge you, such as writing a blog or learning to paint.

Acts of giving and kindness can help improve your mental wellbeing by creating positive feelings and a sense of reward.  Spending time with friends or relatives who need support or company or offering to help someone you know with DIY or a work project.

Another way to help your mental wellbeing is to pay attention to the present moment.  This awareness is often known as “mindfulness”. Mindfulness can help you enjoy life more and understand yourself better. It can positively change the way you feel about life and how you approach challenges.

Mindfulness aims to help you become more self-aware, feel calmer and less stressed, cope with difficult or unhelpful thoughts and be kinder towards yourself.

Look after your mental health, be kind to yourself whilst we recover from the impact of Covid 19.

Mental Health Awareness Week 2022 will take place 9-15 May
