Maintaining Your Fresh Smile

Once your braces are removed, your teeth may not naturally settle into their newfound, straightened alignment. A retainer will play a vital role in maintaining their position. The duration of retainer wear will vary based on your unique situation.

Once your teeth have been properly aligned and reached the desired outcome, it’s crucial to stabilise them until your bone structure, gums, and muscles have adjusted to the new positions. This phase, known as retention, comes after the active braces are removed.

What Choices Do You Have?

Retaining devices are typically worn post-braces to maintain teeth alignment rather than to adjust it further.

There are primarily two types of teeth retainers: a fixed retainer (also referred to as bonded or permanent) and a removable option such as an Essix or Hawley retainer.

Both removable and fixed retainers can uphold the straightness of your teeth for an extended period, provided you adhere to your orthodontist’s recommendations regarding wear! Retaining devices can be obtained for either upper or lower teeth individually, or for both, typically aligning with the areas where your braces were positioned.

Avoid Regression!

Failure to wear retainers as directed may result in your teeth shifting back to their initial positions, potentially negating some of the gains achieved through treatment. Numerous retainers boast a comfortable, clear mouthguard-style design suitable for overnight wear.

The duration of retainer wear varies for each individual; in certain cases, permanent retention may be recommended. This may involve the bonding of thin metal wires to the inner surfaces of the front teeth, either as a supplement to or in lieu of removable retainers.
