What constitutes a brace and what defines an aligner?

Our practice provides a comprehensive array of orthodontic treatments aimed at achieving a straighter smile. Our proficient specialist orthodontist team will thoroughly assess your existing smile and, taking into account your desired results, suggest one or more treatment options, detailing the advantages of each.

Below, you can delve into the most prevalent orthodontic treatment options available at Bristol Dental Specialists.

Lingual braces

Lingual braces offer the utmost discretion in teeth straightening, being affixed to the rear surfaces of your teeth. Consequently, they remain largely unseen by others and are capable of addressing a diverse range of orthodontic issues, including some that may not be correctable with clear aligners.

Invisalign

Invisalign enables you to discreetly and comfortably enhance your smile by employing a sequence of virtually invisible custom-made aligners. These aligners gradually align your teeth without the necessity of metal wires or brackets. Each aligner is uniquely crafted for your teeth and worn for 7-10 days, spanning 20-22 hours daily. They can be easily removed for meals and dental hygiene routines.

Ceramic braces

Tooth-coloured ceramic braces provide a transparent alternative to traditional metal braces. Crafted from a single clear sapphire crystal, each bracket undergoes growth, heat treatment, and polishing to enhance its smoothness and translucency. Sapphire, renowned for its strength, ranks second only to diamond, rendering ceramic braces highly durable.

Metal braces

While not as widely favoured as some of the more inconspicuous options, metal braces remain popular and exceptionally effective. They are more budget-friendly compared to ceramic or bespoke metal brackets and offer comfort during wear. Particularly suitable for children, they can be personalised with various colours, adding an element of fun to wearing them!

Self-ligating braces

Self-ligating braces resemble both fixed metal and clear braces. Brackets are attached to the front surface of your teeth, and a thin arch wire is threaded through them to interconnect.

Retainers

Once your teeth have been aligned and the desired outcome is attained, they must be stabilized until your bone, gums, and muscles have adjusted to the new tooth positions. This phase, known as retention, comes after the active braces are removed.
